From the time I was 11 till the time I was like 28 I went to St.Lucia twice a year.
I would always look forward to getting cocoa pods from the fruit man. A guy with a little boat ,laden with freshly picked fruit, who would pull up to the beach and charge a couple bucks for whatever you picked out.
Cocoa pods are of course where chocolate comes from but when they are ripe the cocoa seeds are encased in a sort of banana-y textured pulp that has a distinct tropical fruit flavor. You suck on the seed stripping the pulp. They were a singular fruit experience you could only get there.
I wouldn’t recommend ordering them or buying at a grocery store. When they are sold this way it’s typically not for this type of eating purpose and they aren’t ripe in the way they need to be for this experience.
Only if you have a chance to, on a tropical island where it grows locally, should you 1000% eat this if you can!
